VISITS TO THE CENTER OF PRIOLO

Interpretation Centre of Priolo, open to the public since 2007, is the gateway to the largest protected area of Lands of Priolo, promoting informed and sustainable visitation of the municipalities of Nordeste and Povoação. It is coordinated by the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds - SPEA, a non-profit NGO closely linked to the conservation of Priolo and its habitat. When visiting the Priolo Environmental Center with your school, you will provide your students with playfull moments and contact with nature. And you can also choose to develop some outdoor activities, promoting the increase of your students' knowledge about the biodiversity of the Azores, especially the fauna and flora of the Pico da Vara / Ribeira do Guilherme Special Protected Area and about the priolo and its escape from extinction.

Guided tour of the interpretation center of Priolo

With the guidance of technicians from the Environmental Center of Priolo, students will be able to explore the interactive panels existing in the exhibition, where they will discover birds and plants existing in the Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme SPA, the Priolo, the problems that threaten their preservation and the actions developed for their conservation.

Duration: 1 hour.

Interpretative route “discovering the laurel forest”

After a brief introduction about the native forest of the Azores and the most common flora, there will be a short walk to an area with natural forest, located near the Interpretation Centre of Priolo, where participants should, following a guide of tips, identify plants endemic to the Azores, as well as some exotic species existing in the Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme SPA that threaten the conservation of the Laurel Forest. Introduction of concepts such as native, endemic, exotic and invasive.

Duration: 2 hours.

Interpretive route “OS SOUNDS OF BIRDS”

Small walking trail to an area with natural forest, located near the Environmental Center of Priolo, with the aim of identifying some of the birds of the Azores through their sound, name and some characteristics. Know concepts: resident, migratory, endemic, nesting and exotic.
