Resident birds of the Azores
SPEA's mission is to contribute to the study and conservation of birds and their habitats, promoting a development that guarantees the viability of the natural heritage for the enjoyment of future generations. In this way, we suggest several activities that allow your students to discover the biodiversity of the Azores, especially the birds of the Azores, but contribute to their growth as active citizens who are aware of the importance of biodiversity conservation.
Workshop “THE BIRDS OF MY SCHOOL”

In this activity, students are introduced to some of the common birds in their school area. They are then invited to build feeders using reusable materials that they later spread on the school playground; so they can observe and learn to identify the birds that appear there throughout the days.
Duration: 90 minutes.
Target audience: 1st cycle.
Workshop “BONES IN HANDS”

Searching for bird bones in the open air, simulating the method used by biologists in the field and identifying them with the aid of support material is the main objective of this activity. It is also intended that students understand the differences found between the bones of birds and other groups, as well as those existing between different species of birds relating these adaptations to their way of life, such as the shape of the beak.
Duration: 90 minutes.

Lecture “THE SOUNDS OF BIRDS”

It is intended to make some of the birds of the Azores known through their name and some of their characteristics, but using the sounds of common birds so that students can get to know them in a different way. Concepts such as: resident, migratory, endemic, nesting are also introduced. With this simple and didactic activity, students get to know the birds of the Azores, especially those species that they cross daily.
Duration: 90 minutes.

Outdoor activity “BIRDWATCHING”

An activity carried out outside the classroom that allows you to identify the birds of the Azores through their morphology, sizes, songs and characteristics. With this didactic activity, students begin bird watching for the first time, have optical equipment and learn to identify species with the help of a bird guide.
Duration: 90 minutes.
